"Computer Boy" is a song by Poppy. It served as the second single from her debut studio album Poppy.Computer and is the sixth track on the album. It was released on May 19th, 2017 alongside a music video. The music video currently has over 14 million views on YouTube, making it Poppy's third most-viewed music video on her YouTube channel and fourth most viewed video on her YouTube channel overall.

Background

The song started to be teased and introduced along with the character of the same name, Computer Boy, on the livestream "Call Poppy 805-624-6667" livestreamed on May 2nd, 2017, in the livestream a number was gave so that viewer could call Poppy, however Poppy did not actually speak to the caller but instead a sound board was used. On a part of the livestream, Computer Boy calls Poppy saying that he wants to "help her" and then repeatedly saying "ComputerBoy.Computer" and he called two times, for Computer Boy a personalized sound board used.[citation needed] This video served as a way to introduce the new character. The introduced website, ComputerBoy.Computer, was a way to promote the single as well as a way to enhace the character's recognizement.[citation needed]

On May 4th, 2017 the video "Floppy Disk" was uploaded to Poppy's channel, this video treats about a floppy disk as the title sugests, this could have likely been a reference to the lyrics "I want your floppy disk to be my hard drive", in the mentioned video Poppy rolls the floppy disk and introduces it into her mouth likely intending sexual conducts.

On May 10th, 2017, on Poppy's X (formerly Twitter) account was posted "19 May", it wasn't specified what would occur on that specific day at first, even though it ended up being the release date for the song.[1]

On May 16th, 2017 the video "I Was Worried" was uploaded to Poppy's channel, the video shows Charlotte appearing feeling well after decaying in drugs, in the video Poppy states that she feels relieved after seeing that Charlotte looks better after decaying in drugs, Poppy then offers interest and help to Charlotte but Charlotte undeniably rejects her. Poppy as well offers help if needed for her child, but Charlotte distorts what Poppy meant and starts choking Poppy while repeatedly saying "who is Computer Boy?" and the video ends. This would be the last tease for the song before the first teaser was released and the song was announced.

On May 17th, 2017, an official teaser for the music video was released, alongside this teaser the release date was revealed on the description of the video.[2] The teaser was made unlisted after the song was released and sometime later the description was changed to her tour dates for promotion.

Theme

Song

"Computer Boy" is about the character Poppy falling in love with someone from the internet, who she dubs "Computer Boy". As their relationship continues, Poppy becomes more and more addicted to him, hence the line, "can't go a day without Computer Boy". She grows extremely attached to him, as he becomes the only thing that makes Poppy happy. She begs him to never leave her side, hoping to never leave this delusion of happiness.

The song can also be interpreted as a metaphor for computer addiction.

In an interview with the Zach Sang Show, Poppy explained the meaning behind the lyric "I want your floppy disk to be my hard drive". She stated that the lyric came from "the heart" and that it actually refers to memory. In response to further comments from the interviewer, she noted that while a floppy disk is temporary, a hard drive is permanent.[3]

Music video

The music video consists of Poppy, Computer Boy and two white bodysuit dancers accompanying them in front of a white backdrop. Throughout the video, the perspective shifts between Poppy looking at the audience and Computer Boy looking at Poppy, stylized in a VHS-inspired fashion. The music video ends with Poppy kissing the monitor displaying Computer Boy.

Lyrics

[Intro]
Boy, boy, boy, boy

[Verse 1]
I'm in love with my favorite toy
Can't go a day without Computer Boy
I smile at him while I turn him on
I'm so happy until Computer's gone

[Pre-Chorus]
I don't care and I won't change myself
I don't want anybody else

[Chorus]
I fell in love with the man of the future
I've got a thing for my laptop computer
I'm so in love with the man of the future
The only one that brings me joy is my Computer Boy
(Boy, boy, boy, boy, boy)

[Verse 2]
I'm trying not to get attached to you (Attached to you)
But no one else gets me like you do (Like you do)
When you glow on my face, you make me come alive
I want your floppy disk to be my hard drive

[Pre-Chorus]
I don't care and I won't change myself
I don't want anybody else

[Chorus]
I fell in love with the man of the future
I've got a thing for my laptop computer
I'm so in love with the man of the future
The only one that brings me joy is my Computer Boy

[Bridge]
(Ooh ooh ooh, ooh ooh ooh)
Don't ever leave me or go to sleep without me
(Ooh ooh ooh, ooh ooh ooh)
Please stay by my side forever and never talk to anyone else
(Ooh ooh ooh, ooh ooh ooh)
My dearest (Boy, boy, boy, boy, boy)
Computer Boy (Boy, boy, boy, boy, boy)

[Pre-Chorus]
I don't care and I won't change myself
I don't want anybody else
No, I don't plan to change myself
To be with anybody...
(Computer Boy!)

[Chorus]
I fell in love with the man of the future
I've got a thing for my laptop computer
I'm so in love with the man of the future
The only one that brings me joy is my computer
I fell in love with the man of the future
I've got a thing for my laptop computer
I'm so in love with the man of the future
The only one that brings me joy is my computer

[Outro]
The only one that brings me joy is my computer
The only one that brings me joy is my Computer Boy
